Tribal Foster Care (FC)

The Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 (ICWA) was enacted to protect the best interests of Native American Indian children. This includes preserving tribal integrity by reducing the destruction of Indian culture caused by the removal of children from Indian homes and environments.

Currently, the Navajo Nation has an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Department of Child Safety (DCS) to administer Foster Care for children. These children must be either enrolled Navajo Nation members or eligible for tribal enrollment. (See Adoption Subsidy Payments for more information about services)
