Father Definition
 
A father can be any of the following:
 
Legal father
The legal husband of the mother of a child at the time of the child's conception or birth. A legal father may also be decided by court order.
Natural father
The natural (biological) father of a child. A child may have a natural father, and a different legal father.
Putative father
A man the mother says is the father. This man may be generally regarded to be the natural father of a child even when there is no legal basis.
